Newtownards Airport
An active general aviation airfield on the edge of Newtownards in County Down, around 8.5 nautical miles east of Belfast. This is where the helicopter lessons on this page take place.
One of Northern Ireland’s earliest civil airports
Newtownards Airport officially opened on 31 August 1934, following the first recorded landing at the site earlier that year. In its early years it served as an important civil aviation base for Northern Ireland.
During the Second World War the airfield was requisitioned for military use and became involved in training, Army Co-operation flying and later fighter-command activity. After the war it returned to civilian aviation.
That history gives Newtownards a very different character from a modern-purpose-built flying site. It is still an active airfield today, but with more than nine decades of aviation behind it.
Newtownards sits at the northern end of Strangford Lough, with Belfast to the west and the Ards Peninsula extending south. That gives the venue a strong Northern Ireland identity while keeping it within straightforward reach of the Belfast area.
A first helicopter lesson from a historic Northern Ireland airfield
Newtownards combines the atmosphere of a working general aviation airport with a location that feels distinctly Northern Irish. The lesson itself stays focused on the helicopter, but the wider airfield gives the day a stronger sense of occasion.
Your experience begins with a briefing before the flying phase. The controls and the way the helicopter responds are introduced before you get airborne, with the instructor alongside throughout the practical part of the lesson.
Tactical Flying uses three short flights shared between three participants, combining two observation sectors with one hands on flying sector. The 20 minute lesson instead gives you dedicated one to one flying time with the instructor.
Newtownards currently has a deliberately simple choice: the £149 Tactical experience or the £245 20 minute one to one lesson.
